Website: learnpsychology.com
This course covers two terms in which you will learn the basic statistical procedures used to conduct research in Psychology and related disciplines. The course is built around the most common statistical software package used today, The Statistical Package for the Social Sciences (SPSS). In general, the course will review a statistical procedure then you will be asked to conduct an exercise in analyzing data with the procedure, using SPSS. The overall goal of the course is for you to become competent in the concepts underlying the procedures and the computer methods for applying the procedures to data analysis.
General Course Format. Each class sequence will involve a presentation on a statistical procedure. This will be followed by an in-class exercise in which you will conduct an analysis of a data set and answer questions about the analysis. The class will also include homework exercises and readings.
Evaluation. The course includes homework exercises. You complete these and then answer a quiz for each exercise. The homework quizzes will count for 40% of your grade. Another 40% of your grade will be based on two, noncumulative examinations. The first exam will be administered at approximately mid-term and the other examination will be given during the finals week.
The Mid-term examination is scheduled for *** ; The final examination will be given at the time stated on the University final examination schedule.
Attendance. You have to attend class to learn about the statistical procedures and complete the in-class exercises.
Computers. You may use your own computer or those in the Korman Center to complete the homework assignments. This course will include a brief introduction to Microsoft Excel. Excel is part of the Microsoft Office package. Most of the course will involve applications in SPSS. You should be able to order the student version of SPSS or use the computers in the Korman center that have SPSS installed.
Homework Exercises. Homework exercises are assigned approximately one each week.
